The last time I used Windows desktop was when it was Windows Vista. Sometime around 2016 maybe even earlier I had to get a new computer at work. I expect everything out and then since my job doesn’t require any Adobe products and there’s multiple Microsoft clone products out there like Google sheets Google docs LibreOffice I didn’t need to get a window system. My day job I’m a online system developer database administrator information leaf blower. But my main focus was on servers and supporting WordPress.
I installed Ubuntu Linux and for the first month or so found it very difficult to use any graphic manipulations. I had installed gimp however I found that after so many years of using $10 worth of Adobe Photoshop to either crop or reduce the size of an image My muscle memory was keeping me back from learning how to use Gimp properly. I did find a gimp fork called eclipse I believe that one of its claim to fames was all the key bindings match everything that’s in Photoshop. I use that for a couple of years and then it disappeared and is no longer being updated and you can’t install it on newer versions of a Linux.
Everything else is either equal when it comes to power say libre calc sheets or Google sheets to Microsoft Excel or better and more powerful for example MySQL versus Microsoft Access… MySQL paired with a good front end like navicat Even beats sequel server.
Anyhow recently with the Microsoft 11 rollout and debacle I am seeing more and more online posts and videos and tweets and Blue sky mentions of how people are dumping windows 11 and going over to Linux as their desktop. And honestly I don’t blame them it’s about time. Microsoft has forgotten about the windows user and has in the past couple of years focused in mainly on their cloud services that compete with AWS and AI. The new Windows 11 that I saw on a notebook has a new icon which is specifically for AI. This is one of those nobody asked for this situations. One of the best comments I saw about it was it’s the new recycle bin.
Another comment that I saw somewhere was that the head of Microsoft was saying that 60% of the code for Microsoft 11 was written by AI. And that there are tons of bugs cropping up everywhere.
My kids computer has Windows 11 and I can’t believe the amount of b******* advertising that is being pushed at the user on every possible window. When I click the start window now I see a modal pop-up with a couple human interest stories and an advertisement. I did a quick Google on how to turn all that stuff off and found Windows 11D bloat which I ran and it got rid of most of the stuff but there’s still remnants. The other thing that’s outrageous is the amount of telemetry data that’s going back to Microsoft. I have our network monitoring All inbound and outbound traffic and see a enormous amount going out to Microsoft when my daughter’s computer is on.
Now with Linux you have none of this. I have been happy for 10 plus years running Linux is my desktop and well not a Linux fanboy I will suggest anyone who is thinking of buying a new computer because Windows 11 will not work for them and Microsoft has decided to turn off Windows 10 support in the near future… Take a look at Linux especially if the only thing that you’re doing is surfing the web & checking your email.
Oh and it’s pretty good at gaming too. Considering the steam deck is Linux based. However if you’re in Adobe user you might be SOL. And in your case get a Mac
