Affording College…

We got accepted into the school that we really want to go to. Everyone is excited. Twelve years of hard work have paid off. The college is excited for us to join too… or so says their weekly brochure and welcome packages, stickers other tchotchkes (yeah I had to google it).

Problem #1 The cost. Scholarship amount that comes back barely covers a few books. I think we have the money but it will wipe out most of a wind fall I had a few years ago. I don’t expect another windfall anytime soon. At least not while they’re both in college.

Student loads are a possibility but looking at the terms of most of these it’s like having a $400,000 credit card bill with 16% APR that you have to pay off. That’s more than my mortgage was and we’ve been in the house 20+ years.

Problem #2 the cost part 2. Number two will be ready for college in two years and this is just going to repeat itself again.

They will both be going to where they want to go. I’ll make sure of it. My wife and I can eat rice until they can both put us into a nice home.
