You’re not being tracked by cookies. You’re being tracked by you.
I spent an embarrassing amount of time a few years ago going down the privacy rabbit hole — VPNs, private browsing, cookie blockers, the works. Felt pretty good about it. Then I stumbled onto browser fingerprinting and realized I’d been playing checkers while ad networks were playing 4D chess.
Here’s the deal: every time your browser loads a page, it quietly leaks a ton of information. Your screen resolution. Your installed fonts. Your GPU. Your timezone. The specific way your graphics card renders a canvas element. Your audio stack. Your CPU’s core count. None of this requires cookies. None of it trips an ad blocker. And when you stitch it all together, you get something that’s statistically unique to your machine — a fingerprint.
Tools like AmIUnique or Cover Your Tracks will show you this in real time. Paste in your results and you’ll usually find out your browser is unique among hundreds of thousands of tested users. Congrats, you’re a special snowflake. The tracking industry figured that out too.
The maddening part is that blocking this is nearly impossible without breaking your browsing experience entirely. Tor Browser tries by making everyone look identical. Privacy Badger and similar tools can reduce the signal but can’t eliminate it. And ironically, installing a bunch of privacy extensions can actually make your fingerprint more unique.
VPN? Doesn’t help. Incognito? Completely irrelevant. The fingerprint travels with your hardware and software configuration, not your IP or session data.
I’m not saying give up — use a good browser, keep extensions minimal, consider Firefox with resistFingerprinting enabled. But go in clear-eyed: on today’s web, true anonymity is basically a myth unless you’re willing to make browsing genuinely miserable.
