Exercise theater

The last couple of years I’ve had a pass at the local rec center. First couple of years it was for the whole family. Then when it came time to renew this year I realized no one other than myself and occasionally my daughter would use it. So trimmed it down to just her and I.

I like to try to get to the gym at least four times a week and do 2,500 meters on the rowing machine. My goal for completing this is also under 13 minutes and while most of the time I’m able to do it between 12 and 13 minutes most of the time it’s closer to 13 if not a little over.

I’ve been noticing, and maybe this is just because I’ve been doing it so long, that after completing my $2,500 m I do not feel as tired or winded as I did when I started. I should also add that I walk three laps around the track as a warm up to get my blood flowing. A full mile on the track is 12 loops so this is a little under quarter mile. In the warmer months also I will take the dog out after my trip to the gym and walk him around a lake at a local park which is another quarter mile.

Maybe it is impostor syndrome but every time I finish up my row and bolt out of the gym I feel like the woman at the desk that checks everyone in is judging me. Like she will look up how long I was in. I haven’t lost a huge amount of weight doing this but I can definitely tell you that I feel better on the days that I do hit the gym then the days that I do not hit the gym. So maybe it is exercise theater but I am less tired on gym days.
